The Rajbari Bawali, Near Kolkata

Back then, the Zamindars (Landlords) of Bengal lived a life of unimaginable opulence. The wealth and privileges they enjoyed during the British colonial rule was unparalleled. Their lives were marked by complex human emotions ranging from intriguing political battles, secret love affairs, love of arts and an acute business sense. They built large houses for themselves which were loaded with riches and the finest luxury India offered at that time. Located 30 km from Kolkata, this 250 years old mansion called The Rajbari Bawali, built in neo-classical style of architecture, belongs to that era.

The Mansion has seen enough of eminent guests, lavish parties and grand living but unfortunately post-independence the Zamindars lost much of their wealth and the house started to fall into disrepair. Many family members of the original owners disappeared altogether as the newer generations started to disperse to build their own lives elsewhere. Inspite of this a few members stayed on, caught up in the memories of their former glory. At one stage, in order to raise money, it was used for film shoots and also a movie hall. But it was not enough to sustain a regular living. It is only recently that The Rajbari mansion, the only building now remaining from that time, albeit in ruins, has been salvaged and exquisitely restored to reflect the opulence, style and grace of the erstwhile Zamindars of Bengal.

Today at Rajbari Bawali, 29 rooms and suites have been carefully restored to recreate the authentic heritage experience whilst providing the utmost in modern day comfort and luxury. The main feature of each guestroom is the traditional Bengali hand-crafted wooden four-poster bed. A combination of the rich tradition of textiles of Bengal and the owner’s love of natural material ensures that high quality cottons and linens have been used throughout. The French-style distressed furniture placed in all the guestrooms and elsewhere is a highlight of this property. A stay here reveals the secrets of the extraordinarily illustrious and extravagant history, which is extremely relaxing, restorative and peaceful.

Here is a break up rooms with details of each category.

Classic Heritage Rooms (20): The lead in category of rooms; high ceilings, four poster beds, a bookshelf or two, with ensuite, spacious bathrooms.

Zamindari Junior Suite (5): The Junior suite of their collection, larger than the Classic rooms, each Zamindari Room has additional space for a separate seating and stocked bookshelf.

Royal Suites (3): Replicating the style of the Zamindars, the Royal Suites have a separate living room, bedroom and bathroom.

Dak Bungalow (1): A two bedroomed, self-contained bungalow, located in the grounds, as elegantly furnished as the main palace, this option is ideal for a small family or those looking for more privacy. Ideal for a writers retreat!

The facilities at Rajbari Bawali include a year-round outdoor swimming pool, a fully functional Spa and an excellent multi-cuisine Restaurant serving Indian, Bengali and Continental fare.

It is recommended for guests who have seen the hustle and bustle of Kolkata Metropolitan city and want to stay at a peaceful place in the countryside nearby surrounded by nature.
