MONTHLY MUSINGS

What's New

“At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom” - Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru

It has been 75 years since these historical words were spoken from the ramparts of the Red Fort, the symbol of Delhi’s undying power. The struggle for freedom and its many movements gave birth to numerous silver screen adaptations that memorialised the journey of the country to becoming a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic, republic.

Oscar-winning Director Satyajit Ray immortalised the Swadeshi Movement in his iconic movie ‘Ghore Baire’ (The Home and Beyond). Based on the writings of Rabindranath Tagore, this regional language movie takes us through the dilemmas and subtleties of the movement that took India by storm. Where a swashbuckling nationalist and a pragmatic socialist represent the two sides of the coin and make one think about the pros and cons of such events.

There is a whole library of movies and books that one can see and read to learn more about India’s freedom struggle. Here are some recommendations that deal with the struggle that was and that is.

  • Gandhi by Richard Attenborough (1982)
  • Mother India by Mehboob Khan (1957)
  • The Legend of Bhagat Singh by Raj Kumar Santoshi (2002)
  • Shatranj ke Khiladi by Satyajit Ray (1977)
  • Train to Pakistan by Pamela Rooks (1998) (Based on Kushwant Singh’s book)

Happy watching!
